A power of attorney (POA) is a legal document that gives someone the authority to act on another person's behalf. The person who gives this authority is called the "principal," and the person receiving the authority is called the "agent" or "attorney-in-fact."

There are different types of power of attorney, but in general, it allows the agent to make decisions or take actions for the principal, such as handling finances, making medical decisions, or managing property.

For example:

  • Financial Power of Attorney: The agent can handle the principal's money, like paying bills or managing investments.

  • Healthcare Power of Attorney: The agent can make medical decisions for the principal if they are unable to do so.

The powers granted can be broad or limited, and the principal can choose when it goes into effect—either immediately or only under specific conditions (like if they become incapacitated).
